Every natural stone has its own level of required maintenance. Even among granites or marbles, there are variations. However, most granites are lower maintenance than most marbles. For granite, all stones except black should be sealed shortly after installation. A well-sealed stone will bead water on its surface. When the water stops beading, the stone must be resealed. In addition, always wipe up spills as soon as they are seen to prevent potential staining, and wash the stone with a PH-neutral cleanser to prevent etching or removal of the finish.
Patterns are making a huge splash, from penny tile to French pattern. But herringbone will be one of the most popular looks of the year. It’s clean-cut, but still draws the eye and stands out. Consider a white herringbone backsplash with a dark grout color, or get wild with pops of different color tiles set in unpredictable places for a more dynamic look. Overhauling original doors and windows and retaining period features is often cheaper than replacement, adding value in the process by enhancing period character. Fitting secondary glazing to original windows is often a good ‘best of both worlds’ solution. If modern double-glazed units have misted, you can save a lot of work by replacing just the glazing panels, rather than the whole window. With roofs, localised repair may be all that’s needed in most cases. Surveyors can sometimes pass premature death sentences when there may be another 10 or 20 years’ lifespan left.
