Speaking of the magazine, we were impressed with their construction, how easy they are to load to capacity and with how they dropped free from the pistol and clicked into place with smooth assurance. The Kimber R7 Mako comes in two versions, one with an included red-dot, and the other with an optics-ready slide. Ours came equipped with a Crimson Trace CTS-1500. The price difference between the two models is $200, and if you’re at all mechanically inclined you can purchase a CTS-1500 for about $140 and save yourself a few bucks for some extra ammo. But even with the optic included, we felt the pistol was a hell of a value. And given how well it ran out-of-the box while being smartly configured for concealed-carry use, it earned the Great Buy designation as well.

Home Defense Handguns: The good news about home defense guns is that you can go as big and bulky as you want without issue. A firearm designed to be used inside the home doesn’t need to be concealed. Bigger and heavier can be good things especially when it comes to capacity and easier to deal with recoil. Range Guns: Range guns fall into a few categories, and they can be plinkers for fun, competition guns, or just an extensive collection of fun guns that mostly see life at the range.

With this pistol, CZ did all the custom work to create a competition-ready handgun so you don’t have to. Out of the box it is configured for IPSC Standard division or USPSA Limited division matches. It comes with oversized controls and a pile of upgrades that help the pistol do what it does best—put lots of lead accurately on target in a short amount of time. Of all the pistols in this year’s gun test we probably put the most rounds through the TS2. It comes with three 20-round magazines—in a nicely executed hard-sized case we might add—and we did all we could to load them up and empty them as quickly as possible.

Sometimes, pistols get included on lists like this because they represent the newest technology and the latest materials. Sometimes, they new renditions of nearly-100-year-old designs made of wood and steel that are proven and easy to shoot. This is the latter. The SA-35 is a Browning Hi-Power clone introduced last year and built with improved materials and on better machines. It’s a solid steel, full sized pistol that still manages to fit easily into every hand and is heavy enough to dampen recoil but not so heavy as to induce fatigue. It is a legendarily balanced pistol. The SA-35 lacks some of the more modern features that many shooters want, such as an equipment rail and an optic cut, but it does have great sights and a light, crisp trigger. The SA-35 might not be the gun I reach for when the commies start parachuting in like Red Dawn, but it is the one I reach for when I want a new shooter to have fun and enjoy shooting.
